Review: Cat Quest (PC/Mobile/Switch/PS4) - No story spoilers

Good afternoon everyone!  I hope you are all having a lovely day so far and you're all excited for the weekend!  I'll spend my day playing some games, go for a walk and possibly chill-out with a movie later on in the evening.

I'll be ending this week with another review, this time it will be for Cat Quest.  This game kept popping up on my recommended tab on Steam and I would always ignore it as I thought it just was not my type of game.  After seeing it pop up so often I decided it's time to actually see what this game is all about and watched a couple of videos.  The game didn't look bad at all and it was on sale so I decided to pick it up and give it a go.

Cat Quest is an open world RPG set in the kingdom of Felingard.  As the player, you take control of a little yellow cat who is on a mission to rescue his sister who has been abducted by Drakoth, the "bad guy" of the games story.  You must explore caves to level up and collect new armour to be strong enough to take on dragon bosses and progress further.

Awaking after a terrible accident, I meet Spirry who becomes your ghostly companion

Cat Quest is a very user friendly game featuring basic controls and menus that are easy to navigate through.  The combat in the game is far from difficult, having the player use melee attacks, the ability to dodge and various spells that you can equip.  In the early stages of the game, the combat is very simplistic but as you progress you will need to time your dodges or you will die and you will also learn that certain monsters take more damage from a certain spell type or melee damage so you must use this to your advantage.  I was extremely surprised by how difficult some mobs could be and found I died a lot more than I thought I would.

Like most RPG's, the game offers a main story quest line as well as several side quests which can be found at almost every town in the game.  These quests are accessed by a message board and are the best way to earn fast experience and money.  One thing that bothered me was the lack of memorable characters while doing quests.  Almost all of the NPC's were generic cats using the same model and were unpleasantly called nothing other than peasants by Spirry.

A little town hub in the game that features an inn where you can rest and save as well as a message board for side quests

The towns in the game are nothing more than an overlay as you are unable to enter buildings or find anything exciting other than a resting place and a message board for quests.  Sometimes the message board will not show anything due to you either finishing the side story for that town or having to level higher.

Some interaction with the games bad guy Drakoth, he will show up from time to time

There is a Blacksmith building in Cat Quest where you can pay gold to get a random piece of gear or an upgrade of something you already have.  This sounds fun at first but I found I never used this place after the first couple of dungeons.  When opening a chest inside of a dungeon, you had a chance of finding a new piece of gear or getting an upgraded version of something you already have.  It really was a shame to see a feature in the game being so useless.  It may have some use in new game+ as there is a chest that costs 5000 gold to buy but honestly, I still don't think i'd make much use of this place.

Kit Cat's blacksmith, looks promising but I never needed to use it sadly

To unlock new spells and upgrade your current ones, you must visit the magic cat's house which is located in various places around the map, much like the blacksmith.  As you progress further in to the game, you are able to purchase new spells from the magic cat in areas that are more dangerous than the earlier areas.  All spells have a maximum level of 10 so you will need a good amount of gold to upgrade them all.

The one thing that I found rather disappointing with Cat Quest was how worthless a lot of the equipment is.  There are so many things you can find within the game each with its own unique appearance but I found more than half of the gear was never equipped due to finding better items early and the stats not being worth using.  This made the options feel so limited and cluttered up the equipment menu with so many useless pieces.

I never used this in the base game and never will in new game+ due to my equipment being much better

I was also a little bit disappointed with the lack of different areas on the map.  The terrain remained the same for around 90% of the game.  There was a very small snowy area and a haunted forest but you spent very little time in those places so the world map became less exciting to explore.

One of two different map areas in Cat Quest, wasn't too much to do here sadly

Overall I would say that Cat Quest is a great time-sink if you are looking for a game that is cute and doesn't take hours and hours to complete.  If you are looking for a heavy story to keep you on the edge of your seat, this is definitely not for you.  I had a lot of fun playing but did miss having a variety of different areas to explore and a true feeling of gear progression.

What rating would I give Cat Quest? 6/10

This rating would have been higher if there was a true sense of gear progression, as mentioned previously so much gear just feels wasted and goes unused.  A bit of variety when exploring the map to feature some new terrain would not go unmissed either.  It's definitely not a bad game by any means, I just felt it could have made better use of its gear system, blacksmith and the world map having more variety.

Thank you all for reading my latest review on Cat Quest.  I hope you all have a fantastic weekend and i'll see you all on Monday. What did you think of Cat Quest if you have played it?  Let me know in the comments below.
